Irkutsk and the Lake Baikal village of Bolshie Koty

Update 2019
From the owner of the Chalet homestay we use in -

This year we are not operating in B.Koty: there are changes in the environmental regulations and requirements going on in the Russian law system, and as long as it’s not clear what is demanded to operate in the middle of a National park we decided not to open to avoid lawsuits.

Due to this people can make a day trip to village - arrive in KOTY without staying there ...Arrive in KOTY village , walking around the village and at 18:00 by boat go back to Listvyanka.

We have an alternative small guesthouse - the only other one - that we can use. These owners are 'resident' as the Chalet are 'non-resident. This is where the 'red tape' comes in.

Another experience is to go to Olkhon Island for 3 Nts

If this situation cahnges we will update this page.

Bolshie Koty is a small village, located on the lakeside 20 km northeast from a popular tourist destination - Listvyanka. There is no vehicle road to this small place, and one can get there only by walking or by boat. The walking trail is a beautiful 20 km hike along the shore, with gentle ups and downs. In summer there are regular public boat connection with Irkutsk and Listvyanka.

Surrounded by woody hills and picturesque cliffs this quiet place has its own life rhythm measured not by hours and days but with the sunshine and seasons. Gold used to be extracted from the Bolshie Koty River and the rusting dredge can still be seen, 1 km beyond the village. In the time of the gold rush the village used to have own bakery, saw mill and small glass factory. Nowadays the main activities for 60 inhabitants of the village are fishing, work at the Irkutsk University Research Station along with growing tourism. In summer the place gets busier with students doing their practical work, locals camping in the nearby valleys and tourists. Easy walks, bright colours, forests full of mushrooms and wild berries together with the outstanding beauty of the lake are the attractions.

Due to a poor tourist infrastructure you have very limited dining opportunities. Therefore our chalet accommodation is, 'all meals'. The rooms (x10) have ensuite and there is also a sauna for guest use. This is a summer season only option unless you do hike in the winter!!
